Choffee Shots… because it is that time of the year once again when you want to indulge into some warm desserts as you lie snuggled into the comfort of warm blankets….I adore this time of the year and love everything winters bring with it. The day begins with a cup of ginger+mint+lemongrass tea I have with my feet wrapped around a warm throw or a kutchhi pure wool hand woven shawl. The winters have become bearable as the earth warms up but I like to follow the rituals we associate with winters and food is one of the most integral of these rituals.
Since past few years I have been living in a country that practically has no seasons. Its just the dry and the wet months. We never experience winters here in Singapore but, I am lucky enough to head over to my hometown Ahmedabad every December when my girls have a winter break at their school. So before we begin our December vacation amidst all the preparations for the annual workshops I conduct in Ahmedabad I felt like ending the year with this sweet, easy, quick and comforting dessert shots I like to whiz up for my house parties. The original recipe is Sanjeev Kapoor’s Chocolate Shots but I have made some additions to the ingredients and changed the method to suit my style of cooking and taste. And since it is not just the chocolate here but, the enticing bitterness of coffee completes this dessert I choose to call it Choffee Shots.. Infuse the shots with the orange zest as they pair very well and notch it up with a dash of rum if you are not serving them to children. The orange and rum make it a very sophisticated dessert. Try it!!
A note of caution… make a double batch of these Choffee Shots as the guests will commoner for a second serving, I promise!!
Cheers to a peaceful and joyous 2018. Wishing you all a very fulfilling year ahead. Thank you for the love and support you have shown to this space….
Choffee ShotsPrint Recipe

- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 teaspoon instant coffee powder
- 1 cup chocolate ice-cream, dark chocolate is better
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

- orange zest (optional)
Chop the chocolate roughly.
In a clean saucepan heat milk on medium flame.
Just as it comes to a simmer, turn off the flame and add the chocolate, coffee powder, vanilla extract, rum and orange zest (if using), allow the mix to stand for few minutes, until the chocolate melts and stir to a smooth sauce.
Once you have the sauce, turn on the flame and add the chocolate ice-cream.
Turn off the flame once the mix has warmed up a bit.
Pour the chocolate-coffee concoction in shot glasses and serve.
Chofee Shots are best enjoyed warm.
